Vartiotorniseuran käytös osoittaa jälleen kerran, että sen tarjoaman totuuden mukaan Jehova vaatii rivijehovantodistajilta rehellisempää käytöstä kuin voidellulta profeetaltaan.

Pata kattilaa soimaa?

Kaikki eivät pidä väärien ennustuksen tehtailua raamatullisen totuuden merkkinä. Ja vaikka uusiokäyttö on päivän sana, niin tuskin väärän ennustuksen valjastaminen uusiokäyttöön tekee siitä yhtään luotettavampaa. Vartiotorniseura pyrkii kaikin tavoin hyödyntämään vanhaa materiaalia, jotta liikkeen syntyyn saataisiin ajallista etäisyyttä. Eräs tällainen yritys tehtiin vuoden 1975 maailmanloppuodotuksen ollessa kuumimillaan. Vuonna 1973 julkaistiin kirja “God’s Kingdom of a Thousand Years Has Approached”. Kirjassa lainataan Russelin vuonna 1876 kirjoittamaa tekstiä seuraavalla tavalla:

“In the course of their Bible studies, these searching students took up a consideration of the ‘times of the Gentiles,’ as spoken of by Jesus at Luke 21:24 (AV), and they associated those Gentile Times with the ‘seven times’ mentioned four times in Daniel, chapter four, verses 16, 23, 25, 32. What did those Bible students determine to be the date for those ‘seven times’ of Gentile domination of the earth to end legally before God? Well, at that time there was a monthly magazine being published in Brooklyn, New York, by one George Storrs, and it was called ‘Bible Examiner.’ In the year 1876 the twenty-four-year-old Russell made a contribution on the subject to this magazine. It was published in Volume XXI, Number 1, which was the issue of October, 1876. On pages 27, 28 of that issue Russell’s article was published under the title ‘Gentile Times: When Do They End?’ In that article (page 27) Russell said: ‘The seven times will end in A.D. 1914.’” (ka p. 186)

Katsotaan sitten tuon lainauksen asiayhteys, mitä 24-vuotias Russell tuon tekstinsä mukaan odotti tapahtuvaksi vuonna 1914? Se selviää heti yllälainattujen sanojen jälkeen, itse asiassa tuossa lauseessa olevan puolipisteen jälkeen:

“…the seven times will end in A.D. 1914; when Jerusalem shall be delivered forever, and the Jew say of the Deliverer, ‘Lo, this is our God, we have waited for Him and He will save us.’ When Gentile Governments shall have been dashed to pieces; when God shall have poured out of his fury upon the nation, and they acknowledge, him King of Kings and Lord of Lords.“ (Bible Examiner Oct. 1876 page 27)

Siitä huolimatta, että jokainen Russelin odotus on osoittautunut vääräksi, niin Vt-seura ottaa mielellään rusinan kakusta ja jättää ilmaisematta asiayhteyden. Edellä esitetyn lisäksi tuossa vuoden 1876 artikkelissa Russell ei lainannut kaikkia mainittuja Danielin neljännen luvun jakeita, vaan ainoastaan jakeen 23. Itse asiassa Russell yhdisti seitsemään aikaan 3. Moos. 26:27 ja 28.

Samoin on hyvä pitää mielessä, että Russelin lopun aika alkoi vuonna 1799 ja päättyi vuonna 1914, yllä lainatun kirjan kirjoitushetkellä Vt-seura opetti lopun ajan alkaneen, ei päättyneen, vuonna 1914.

Koska Vt-seura ei järjestönä ole lainkaan tunnettu omien tekstiensä ja tekemistensä kriittisestä tarkastelusta, niin katsotaan miten seura on ohjeistanut rivijäseniään nimenomaan lainausten suhteen:

Vartiotorniseuran käytös osoittaa jälleen kerran, että sen tarjoaman totuuden mukaan Jehova vaatii rivijehovantodistajilta rehellisempää käytöstä kuin voidellulta profeetaltaan.

Tässä esimerkki tarkoitushakuisesta lainauksesta, kas näin Vartiotorni kirjoittaa:

"Some seismologists believe that the earth is now in an active earthquake period. For example, Professor Keiiti Aki of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology speaks of 'the apparent surge in intensity and frequency of major earthquakes during the last one hundred years,' though stating that the period from 1500 through 1700 was as active." (w 83 May 15 p. 6)

Ja tässä proffan vastaus, josta lainaus on otettu:

"This is in response to your inquiry about earthquakes [EC:ESH September 24, 1982]. The apparent surge in intensity and frequency of major earthquakes during the last one hundred years is, in all probability, due to the improved recording of earthquakes and the increased vulnerability of human society to earthquake damage. The main reason is the well established plate tectonics which indicates a very steady fault motion over the past many millions of years.

A measure of earthquake strength more objective than casualty is the Richter scale. It is in general difficult to assign the Richter scale to earthquakes more than 100 years ago. An attempt, however, has been made in China, where historical records are kept in better shape than in other regions. Enclosed figures shows the Richter scale (M) of earthquakes in China during the periond of about 2000 years. The past 100 years are certainly active, but there have been periods as active as that, for example, from 1500 to 1700."

Ehkä Vt-lehden lukijat 'eivät ole oikeutettuja kuulemaan totuutta', jolloin tuolainen valikoiva lainaus ei olekaan valheellista?

Tässä toinen tyylinäyte siitä kuinka omaa materiaalia voi käyttää auktoriteettinä:

Vuonna 1977 Herätkää!-lehden helmikuun 22. päivän englanninkielisessä numerossa oli sivulla 11 artikkeli “There Will Be Great Earthquakes”. (Vastaava artikkeli julkaistiin suomenkielellä 8. elokuuta sivulla 10, otsikolla ”Tulee olemaan suuria maanjäristyksiä”.)

Italialainen lehti Il Piccolo muokkasi hieman artikkelia ja julkaisi sen 8. lokakuuta vuonna 1978. Tämän jälkeen Vartiotorniseura lainasi – Il Piccolon hieman muuttamaa – omaa tekstiään otsikolla ”Earthquake ’Generation’” neutraalina auktoriteetinä vuoden 1979 Vartiotornilehden kesäkuun 15. päivän numeroon sivulle 11. (Vastaava artikkeli – ”Maanjäristysten ’sukupolvi’” julkaistiin suomenkielellä 1. lokakuuta sivulla 11.)

Vartiotorniseura on lainannut Il Piccolon kautta kierrättämäänsä omaa materiaalia neutraalina lähteenä kymmenkunta kertaa. Kuinka rehellistä tuollainen on, jääköön loppukevennykseen, johon Il Piccolokin pääsee mukaan. Alla lainatun tekstin väliotsikkokin sopii kuin suutarin sormi sian korvaan: ”Muut huomaavat rehellisyyden”.

“Muut panevat usein merkille Jumalan palvelijoiden rehellisyyden. Esimerkiksi italialainen Il Piccolo -sanomalehti julkaisi erään lukijansa kirjeen, jossa sanottiin: ”Haluan kiittää sitä naista, joka mainitsi olevansa Jehovan todistaja ja joka todisti esimerkillisen rehellisyytensä lähettämällä minulle takaisin tämän sanomalehden välityksellä melkoisen rahasumman, jonka olin kadottanut.” Yhdysvalloissa Indianapolis Star kirjoitti Jehovan todistaja -pariskunnasta, joka löysi 4000 dollaria (20 000 mk) ja palautti sen omistajalle. Lehdessä mainittiin, että nämä todistajat ”eivät epäröineet lainkaan, mitä heidän olisi tehtävä”. Miksi eivät? He sanoivat: ”Emme voineet pitää sitä. Me olemme Jehovan todistajia.” (Vartiotorni 15. marraskuuta 1986 sivu 14)

Vartiotornikirjallisuus on täynnä väärinlainauksen malliesimerkkejä. Kolminaisuuskirja ja "luomisen tulos" kirja ovat ehkä parhaimmat esimerkit.

Tänne ketjuun olisi tarkoitus herätellä keskustelua väärinlainaamisesta, ja kerätä mahdollisimman paljon suoria esimerkkejä Vartiotornin väärinlainauksista. Jos keskustelun anti on hyvää, yritän vääntää aiheesta hyvän tiivistelmän pääsivun puolelle. Jos anti ei ole aivan niin hyvää, me saamme toivottavasti muutamat hyvät naurunremakat lueskellessa Vartiotornin parhaita paloja.

Tuo on sitä rusinoiden poimimista kakusta, ei vakavasti otettavaa todistelua. Ei silti, kolminaisuuskirjanen on - luomiskirjan ohella - malliesimerkki väärinlainaamisesta.

Tuossa luettelossahan löytyy useampia asioita, jotka ovat Vartiotornin mielestä totuutta. Se ei kuitenkaan estä heitä ratsastamasta tällä lainauksella.
